Golf History

The first introduction of golf in Hungary was organized by Baron Géza Andrássy at the racecourse in 1902. The first course was built in Tátralomnic and the first competition was organized here in 1909. The constructor of the course, Dezső Lauber was the president of the club, the secretary of Hungarian Olympic Committee and later multiple Hungarian golf champion. The Budapest Golf Club was founded in Budapest in 1911 which later became the Hungarian Golf Club. The world famous course on the Széchenyi hill was also designed by Dezső Lauber at the beginning of the 1920s. Bobby Jones, one of the most famous golf players ever, also turned up on this course. At that time the Hungarian golf life started to develop at a high speed. Between 1926-36 it was a determining part of the European golf life. Besides being a three-time and later all-time champion in Munich (at that time it was one of the best ranked tournaments) with Béla Gyurkovics and Jenő Kovács they formed one of the best teams in Europe. Mrs. Béla Szlávy -19 times Hungarian, 5 times Austrian, 4 times Bohemian champion between 1920-1944, after winning the German Championship in 1926 was awarded the best European player, furthermore the fifth best woman player in the world. The Hungarian golf was successful those times, dozens of well trained players boosted the game. This result was partly achieved by Malcolm Goodwill, trainer from England, who also helped design the Széchenyi hill golf course. We must commemorate of József Stammel assistant trainer who was all along faithful to the game after the war and in that discriminating period in Hungarian history and kept on training Hungarian juniors till 1955.

Hungarian Golf before and after the change of regime
The political discrimination also influenced golf in Hungary, from 1952 to 1970 it was a sport non grata. Dr. Ferenc Gáti, engineer in agriculture, established the Blue Danube Golf Club and started to build a golf course in Kisoroszi. In 1989, the conditions were good enough for establishing the Hungarian Golf Association, directed by Dr. Ferenc Gáti. The association became member of the European Golf Association and the World Amateur Golf Committee. Courses were built throughout the country, the Birdland Golf & Country Club in Bükfürdő in 1991, St. Lorence Golf & Country Club in Szentlőrinc in 1992, Hencse National Golf & Country Club in Hencse in 1994. The golf course of Blue Danube Golf Club in Kisoroszi was enlarged to 18 holes. The Pannonia Golf & Country Club in Máriavölgy, Fejér county, was established in 1997. The sixth golf course, Old Lake Golf & Country Club was opened in the game park of Tata in September, 1998.
